Forecasting for the maritime industry requires specific metocean expertise and, in 2005, MeteoGroup's MRD department developed the Nautical MeteoBase (NMB), a unique and innovative weather forecasting system for the maritime market.

Nautical MeteoBase
The Nautical MeteoBase (NMB) takes data from the most respected global forecasting models in the world:
ECMWF (European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts), a model from the joint European weather services
UKMO (UK Meteorological Office)
NCEP (National Centers for Environmental Protection) of the American National Weather Service, part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)
The forecasting models each have different qualities so the NMB makes use of the best characteristics from each. With input from multiple models, the NMB is extremely reliable as it will produce a forecast, even in the unlikely event that one or more of the models were to fail.

The role of the forecaster
The NMB's output is interpreted and fine-tuned by our highly skilled meteorologists and researchers. Further value is added by combining ECMWF's Ensemble Forecasts.
MeteoGroup's meteorologists have no preference for any one model and they continually monitor and evaluate the output, adjusting the forecast if they think it necessary.
Verification
Our investment in model data, combined with our in-house meteorological expertise, ensures that the NMB generates weather forecasts of unprecedented quality and accuracy and ongoing verification has proven that the NMB outperforms all of the individual models.
