Improving short term forecasting

-
In the past decades, radar and satellite observations have become a major part of the modern weather monitoring framework. MeteoGroup uses radar and satellite images to supplement the information available from weather station observations.
MeteoGroup's MRD team has developed in-house techniques to improve short term forecasting using radar and satellite images.

Satellite
Satellites scan the globe looking at various wavelengths in order to identify a range of weather parameters including clouds, fog and cloud top temperature. MeteoGroup uses this very efficient tool for monitoring cloud development and movement as well as for severe weather surveillance.
MeteoGroup has satellite images which are available in 15 minute intervals in Europe and Africa and at least three hour intervals for the rest of the world. The images have a horizontal resolution of 5km at the equator, becoming coarser towards the poles.
Satellite MOS
MeteoGroup has developed a method to improve short term radiation forecasts. This application is called Satellite MOS and uses real-time, high resolution visible satellite images. Satellite images are decoded automatically and shifted with the prevailing wind direction and speed, giving a cloud and radiation forecast for a few hours ahead.
-
Radar
Another important source of information is ground based weather radar systems. Within a radius of up to 200km these radar systems detect precipitation and its intensity. Radar images are usually available every 15 minutes and in some countries scans are done every five minutes.
Precipitation type radar
Commonly used precipitation radars show the intensity and spatial distribution of precipitation but not the precipitation type (eg rain or snow). MeteoGroup has developed its own technique to combine radar data with other information so that we can provide images showing precipitation type as well as intensity. This is of great importance in the winter and can also be used for severe weather warning services.
Radar MOS
MeteoGroup has developed a state-of-the-art precipitation forecast system for very short term forecasting. Radar images are extrapolated into the future and combined with more general forecasting tools to improve forecasts of precipitation rate and probability.
