MeteoGroup has one of the most comprehensive databases of global historical meteorological data in the world, ranging from the mid-twentieth century to the present day. How does it work behind the scenes?
MeteoGroup's Historical Weather Database has been created by our in-house meteorological research and development team. Our systems gather the data from various sources around the globe, checking the quality, and categorising it before adding it to our database.
Where gaps occur, we use several techniques to simulate the missing observations. This data then needs to be adapted to the local climatology of the relevant location. For this MeteoGroup applies a type of model output statistics (MOS), a similar method to that which we use for our forecasts.
